The tropical zodiac used on this site begins at the exact moment of the spring equinox—0° of Aries—and runs through the year to Pisces, which dissolves back into the next spring. Your zodiac sign, in the everyday sense, is simply the sign the Sun occupied at your birth.

Two coordinates locate every sign's personality. The first is the element: fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) run on enthusiasm and action; earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) on the practical and the tangible; air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) on ideas and exchange; water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) on feeling and instinct. The second is the modality, which describes how a sign uses its element. Cardinal signs open a season and initiate; fixed signs hold its middle and stabilize; mutable signs close it and adapt. Cross four elements with three modalities and you get exactly twelve combinations—no two signs share both, which is why each one is genuinely distinct.

A word about dates, because it decides more arguments than anything else in astrology: the boundaries between signs are not fixed calendar days. Each sign begins at the instant the Sun reaches a specific point of the ecliptic, and that moment drifts by a day or so from year to year.
